Interesting Baubles for Genealogists to Play With

baubles Genealogists love working on family research, (even when it gets somewhat frustrating). Sometimes, though, it is good to take a break. Have some fun checking out these genealogy related “baubles”. They don’t come with a search engine, but they might be fun to play around with.

I have decided to call this list of genealogy related fun items “baubles” for two reasons. One, I like that the word sounds like something from the past. When was the last time you heard someone use the word “baubles” in a sentence?

The other reason I am calling these things “baubles” is because they are fun. None of them is a resource that can be searched through for important genealogy documents. You can’t use them to further your research, or to get some difficult genealogy work done. They have other uses, instead.

There is a website called freq.uenci.es (and yes, it is spelled that way). The website describes itself as “a collaborative genealogy of spirituality”. They asked scholars, writers, and artists what they think of when they think of the word “spirituality”. The answers they gave were combined into this website. Together, it kind of gives a genealogy of the word, by connecting all these different concepts.

Shoebox is a genealogy app that puts all of your photos into one place. The app uses the camera on your iPhone to scan all of your old family photos. After you scan them, you can do things like crop, straighten, or rotate the photo. You can also add captions, dates, and tags.

The Shoebox app is now partnering with Facebook. It makes it easier for you to add all your family photos to your Facebook page. Share them with your relatives who are on Facebook.

The Life Writer is a website that helps you to compose your life story. It talks you through the process. First, you answer some questions. Then you add photos.

You can customize the color you want the pages, and the cover, of this book to be. It is a print-on-demand type of publishing. Genealogists might want to create one of these about the life of one of their relatives. It would make a nice gift!

Are you on Google+ ? If so, then you should add Ancestry.com to your circles. I believe that they joined Google + fairly recently. Ancestry.com posts rather frequently to both their Google + page with helpful information, and interesting links.
