Interesting Ways Celebrities Spend Their Money

David Lynch, the mastermind who put his stamp on blockbusters such as “The Elephant Man,””Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Dr.” movies and the “Twin Peaks” TV series is reaching out to those who want to help make a difference in the world.

Lynch, who is a longtime practitioner of Transcendental Meditation, recently donated a ton of money (think $1 million plus dollars) to his nonprofit foundation in order to fund scholarships for students who want to learn a meditation technique taught at the Maharishi University of Management.

The school doesn’t only teach students about meditation it also offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in computer science, art, design, business and sustainable living. However, Lynch says he is interested in paying for young adults to learn the science of peace and to “actually promote peace in the world.”

The filmmaker says he plans to give $1 million in scholarships to students in need and in the process hopes to increase enrollment on the university’s campus to 2,000.

The 62-year-old director created the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace in 2005 and plans to host “David Lynch Weekend” at the school on April 25-28. The event will feature performances by Donovan, Moby and Chrysta Bell.

But Lynch is not the only celebrity using his money to help people follow their dreams.

Members of the best–selling band Radiohead are teaming up with TBD Records, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and animation Web portal Aniboom.com to sponsor an online contest inviting fans to produce an animated music video.

Contestants must choose a song from “In Rainbows,” the band’s popular 2007 album that was originally available for download at an optional price. Once all the entries are received online voters and a panel of judges will select finalists with Radiohead choosing a winner who will receive a $10,000 prize (part of which is coming from the band’s profits) to produce a full-length animated music video.

Entries will be accepted through April 27th.
