Intro to Geocaching 4: Preparing for the Hunt

Now that you have read the Overview, searched for a local cache, understand how to read the clue, you are ready to prepare to set out on your hunt!

Preparation:

There is just a little bit of pre-hunt preparation that needs to be done before you head out the door. Don’t worry, it won’t take long.

First, check the weather. It is never fun to be caught out in bad weather in the middle of a long hike far from home! If the weather is questionable, double check that you have picked a hunt that does not have a long walk, just in case.

Next, pack up a bag. We use a small “fanny pack”. You should consider bringing the following:

  • An extra set of batteries for your GPS – trust me, always carry these!
  • A few McToys or trinkets if you (or your kids!) plan to trade, we always bring one for each child.
  • A pen to sign the log book, often the pen is out of ink or missing or a microcache would be too small for a pen and you will want to drop a line to let the cache owner know you’ve stopped by.
  • A print-out of your clue and the map, if needed.

Handy but Optional:

  • Local maps, if needed. This will probably only be needed if you are geocaching in unfamiliar territory such as while on vacation in another state or country.
  • Compass, although most GPS units have built in compasses, including the bottom of the line units. If yours doesn’t, any cheapo kids compass will do.
  • Sunscreen, if needed
  • Bug Spray, if needed
  • Snacks for the kids, if you plan to be gone long.
  • Water for everyone, avoid dehydration!
  • A baby carrier or backpack for those who aren’t yet mobile. Many trails and paths are not stroller friendly so read the cache clues carefully before you head out in case this is an issue for your family.

This is really all you need. As you find yourself going on more and more hunts, you will notice other people’s “calling cards” and may wish to make one of your own.

Now pack up your car and you are ready to roll!
