Introducing Solids Part III

Since my daughter’s desire for solid foods has increased in just a few short weeks, I am trying to give her a little bit of something at every meal from whatever I have prepared for the family.

She got her first taste of peas (which in my mind are a baby food classic) when I made spicy stir fry (with a homemade chemical-free sauce). I squeezed the pea to release the softer inner portion and presented it to my daughter. She stared at it for a few seconds before she opened her mouth and moved her head closer to take the bite. Her reaction was one of curiosity. I offered her another taste. Again she stared at it for a few seconds then moved to take the taste. When she was done with the peas, we moved on to a tiny taste of brown rice. Her reaction to the rice was not what I had expected. First she immediately spat the small, soft grain of rice out of her mouth and started to fuss. When I offered her another small grain of rice she not only turned her face away but she also started to cry. Apparently she does not like rice at all! I am perfectly happy that my daughter has no interest in grains right now.

We still do eggs for breakfast almost every morning of the week (we do whole grain blueberry buttermilk pancakes once a week for breakfast too). After making a scrambled omelette every day for the bulk of my pregnancy and early post partum, we eventually shifted to making over medium eggs again broken up by the occasion scrambled eggs or omelette. In the midst of our over medium egg kick, I started offering my daughter some tastes of an egg yolk …
