Last week Apple released a new version of their iPod Nano. The iPod (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition iPod is your typical 4GB iPod Nano, with an extra special twist. The iPod (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition iPod also benefits the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.
The iPod, which is red in color, can only be purchased online or at your local Apple store. When you purchase the iPod, $10 of your purchase price is given to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.
This iPod is one of the dozens of electronics I have come across recently that donate part of the purchase price of an item to reach or help a prominent cause. One thing I have particularly noticed in shopping out and about is the abundance of pink electronics designed to benefit breast cancer.
In most cases I usually feel like electronics that are made to blatantly support a cause are usually designed to support their own personal cause. The logic of the manufacturer being that more people will purchase the item because they want to help out a cause such as breast cancer, and will be willing to spend more on an electronic because part of their purchase price is donated to the cause. In many cases the electronic is something that was failing in sales, or is extremely overpriced, and the amount the company is donating is a very small fraction of the price of the actual item.
This iPod is actually something I can get behind however. The iPod doesn’t cost any more than the regular 4GB Nano, and the item is already extremely popular, Apple doesn’t need to color it read in order to sell it. If you’re looking for something to purchase a friend or family member this holiday season consider the (PRODUCT) RED Nano, you can help a cause, and gets a fantastic mp3 player.
The iPod (PRODUCT) RED Nano is available at Apple stores nationwide, as well as online at the Apple store.
