Irony And/Or Coincidence?

On the very day that her new album hit stores, pop singer Jessica Simpson was a no show at numerous critical personal appearances. Simpson’s publicist tells media outlets that the former “Newlywed” is suffering from a case of laryngitis.

A “bruised vocal chord” to be exact. The injury forced Simpson to cancel her “Today” show appearance (PEOPLE Magazine reports that she is now re-scheduled to appear on the show’s “Summer Concert Series” on Friday and is also booked to “speak, but not perform” on Wednesday’s “Today” show) as well as a Wednesday appearance with David Letterman.

“It is true that she has indeed lost her voice,” Simpson’s publicist told reporters. “She’s been ordered to rest. … She can talk, she can croak out a few sentences. She sounds a little off, but, you know, she can’t sing.”

She didn’t sing, but she did show up to a scheduled appearance on MTV’s “TRL” Tuesday. I saw the clip online and Simpson did manage to “croak” out a few sentences as she introduced some videos. She did sound hoarse, but if she was in pain you couldn’t tell. She smiled the entire time and even signed some autographs for fans.

Okay, that’s the ironic part of this blog. But, remember the title of this blog is “Irony And/Or Coincidence?” Brace yourself because here comes the coincidence part.

Us Weekly and “Access Hollywood” are reporting that Simpson (who spent months in the headlines after splitting from her husband, singer Nick Lachey) may be dating another famous singer-songwriter—John Mayer.

According to Us Weekly: “Jessica and John Mayer have been bitten by the love bug and are now a couple.” The magazine goes on to say that the couple has reportedly been dating since July.

Now, get this, just two days ago the magazine reported Mayer cancelled a Connecticut concert also due to “throat problems,” citing a case of “laryngitis.”

Last I checked laryngitis wasn’t a communicable disease. So is it a case of irony or coincidence? I would say both.
