Is Fear Holding You Back?

Fear can stop us doing those things we know we should do. On Australia Day, 31 people in the Shoalhaven area committed to becoming Australian citizens. One person only took a couple of months to make that decision. Another man admitted it took him 62 years to decide to become an Australian citizen. One could only assume it was a fear of committing himself and changing his allegiance.

Maybe you are in a similar position, with regard to the Lord? You’re afraid of committing yourself. You’ve heard the gospel message. You’ve felt the tug of Jesus on your heart prompting you to hand over your life to him. But you’re scared of committing to Jesus, because it might mean a change in your lifestyle or your friendships or work situation. So you keep putting it off. Another day, another week, another year goes by. It’s easy to carry on as you are.

This is not what Peter and Andrew, James and John did. They met Jesus, heard his call and responded by following Jesus, Matthew 4:18-22. They left all to follow him, unlike the young man who wanted to know how he could gain eternal life yet walked away from Jesus. He was afraid to commit to Jesus because of what it would cost him, Matthew 19: 21-22. Jesus understood his dilemma and the intense hold his possessions had on him, verses 23-24. How it must have grieved His heart!

Understandably the disciples wondered what the future held for those like them, who had left everything to follow Jesus. Jesus assured them they would not lose out because of their decision but would be blessed many times over because they stepped out in faith and made the decision to follow Jesus, verses 28-29.

Which brings us back to you. How long are you going to put off committing to Jesus? Or to deepening your relationship with Him? Are you letting fear hold you back?

The Bible reminds us, ‘Now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is the “day of salvation,”-’ 2 Corinthians 6:2. So, what are you going to do about it? Don’t put it off any longer. The time to decide to follow and commit to Jesus is NOW.
