Is Hair Color Safe During Pregnancy?

Whether you already color your hair or want to start, you may be wondering if it is safe to use hair coloring products during pregnancy. Most experts say that using hair color is probably safe for pregnant women. While there is no proof that it is absolutely safe, there is no evidence it is dangerous either. You should always check with your doctor before using any product. Most will tell you to wait until after the first trimester.

There are some dyes that may be even safer than traditional coloring products. These are known as herbal or vegetable dyes. They are often sold in health food stores. Be aware that they do contain many of the same chemicals found in commercial hair coloring products.

A semi permanent color is an alternative to permanent coloring. These contain some chemicals, but are not as harsh as permanent colors. Semi permanent colors come in nearly as many shade variations as permanent dyes. They last for about a month and gradually wash out of your hair. Be aware that these only work with colors that are near the same tone as yours or darker. If you have dark hair, you won’t get blonde with a semi permanent color.

If you want to use a permanent color, it is considered safe after the first trimester. Consider going a little longer between touch ups to limit the amount of chemicals you are putting on your head. Generally, women touch up their color about once each month. Consider waiting eight weeks between sessions. This cuts your exposure in half over the length of your pregnancy. Unless your hair grows very fast, you may not even notice the difference.

If you are still concerned about the safety, consider alternatives to coloring your whole head. Highlights are a safe alternative to hair color. These can be applied by the stylist pulling sections of your hair through a cap or with foil for longer hair. This can give you the look you want without the fear of exposure to chemicals. The color does not touch the scalp and is not absorbed into the bloodstream. With a little thought and planning, you can look beautiful during your pregnancy.
