Is Homeschool Right for My Family?

raad Today we have more options than ever before when it comes to finding the best education for our children. Charter schools are being built all over the nation, private schools have gained in popularity over the years, and home school is becoming less of a frightening thought and more of a “thing to do.” But far from being a fad that will go out of style, this alternative is gaining long-term support, and more and more families are choosing this method of schooling for their own families.

But how do you make the right choice for your children? I suggest the following.

1. Are your children exceptionally bright? I know we all think our children are perfect, and of course we’re right, but if you have a child who is excelling far beyond the norm, you might consider homeschooling as an option to allow them to advance at their own pace. Conversely, if you have a child who needs repetition of basic principles on a regular basis, being at home would allow that child to proceed at his own, more repetitive pace.

2. Are you in a position to stay home during the day to be with your children? Many homeschool families make financial sacrifices to keep a parent home, but I’ve frequently heard them say they felt it was worth it. Some families, however, can’t do without a second income. In that case, could you work from home, or on a swing shift?

3. How do you feel about the current education system in our nation? Would you feel more comfortable if you were able to have a hands-on role in your children’s learning?

4. As you think about your children and their personalities, how do you feel homeschool would work for them? As parents, we know our children better than anyone. We know what makes them upset, what makes them feel validated, and what motives them. No one else can “read” our children like we can.

As you contemplate this important decision, remember that it can be reversed if you feel it’s not working for you. Many families enroll their children in junior high and high school after completing the elementary education at home. Some families homeschool for just one or two years. Above all, keep in mind the needs of your children and the importance of your relationship with them. Homeschool can be a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
