Some of us find it hard to get into our scriptures. No, it’s not because the pages are glued shut or the zipper is stuck!
Often, when I sit down to read, I find my mind wandering the minute I turn the page. Instead of reading about Alma, I’m wondering if I’m out of milk and need to run to the store. Instead of commiserating with Nephi, I’m trying to figure out how to keep my children from fighting.
What are some ways we can make our scripture time more productive?
1. First, we liken the scriptures unto ourselves. We are told that any scripture in our standard works can be likened unto us – in other words, we can put ourselves in there and take the commandments and the promised blessings personally. The next time you read, “I will go and do the things which the Lord commanded,” put your name in there. “I, Tristi, will go and do.” It gives a more personal perspective that is sometimes lacking.
2. Are you a visual person? If so, you might find it helpful to imagine everything that you’re reading. It’s easier to remember which prophet said what when you’ve imagined a face for him, or what he was wearing when he said it. I know that when it comes to the war scenes, I can figure out what’s going on a lot better if I’m visualizing it.
3. Talk it over with your spouse. Very often, when I’ve gone to discuss a certain scripture with my husband, I’ve found understanding even as I’ve talked about it. I think the Spirit loves to help us out when we’re demonstrating our true desire to learn.
These are just a few ways to make your scripture reading more interesting. I hope you find them helpful and that your personal study just becomes more and more joyful.
