We live in an era where there is an expectation that we should LOVE what we do for work and find the idea career that inspires and enriches us. However, I recently had a conversation with a much older, retired person who shared with me her philosophy on working and business. She said that it doesn’t matter WHAT we do for work, it’s all about HOW we go about doing it…
It was an interesting conversation that got me to thinking about what a luxury it is for me to be able to choose to do work I love. This doesn’t mean that I necessarily love everything about the work I do in my home business—and I certainly have not been madly in love with other work or more traditional jobs that I have done in my “career.” However, I’ve been lucky enough or plucky enough to find ways to do work that, for the most part, I feel good about. But, I think that this older mentor is very right about attitude and effort having the potential to be much more important in our work and business life.
Who among hasn’t known someone who did rather uninspiring work, or started a business that didn’t seem terribly exciting—but they took such care and made such an effort that you would have thought they had the most fabulous job in the world? I know that my grandparents definitely have a very different idea about what to expect from work than I’ve been conditioned. Just think it we could pass on some of our own experiences and expectations about work and business to our children, ALONG WITH some of that wisdom on attitude and effort that comes from the older generations too? Maybe our children will be able to be inspired by WHAT they do for work, as well as have a grand attitude about the HOW of it as well…
