Is Kentucky Fried Chicken really trying to treat my daughter like a piece of meat?
Well, technically, my daughter is too young to be at the center of this KFC controversy, but yours might be the company’s latest target.
So, here’s the scoop on the chicken company’s crazy conundrum: Less than a year after it debuted its now infamous KFC Double Down Sandwich (the one that features two pieces of fried chicken fillets in the place of bread and squishes two slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese, two slices of bacon and a special sauce in between them) marketers are looking to attract new customers.
According to USA Today, the finger lickin’ good fast food chain is reaching out to the 18-to 25-year-old demographic. Specifically, female college students, who are willing to turn their rumps into moving billboards.
KFC is reportedly offering girls enrolled at Spalding University $500 to wear sweatpants with “Double Down” emblazoned across the rear.
So the junk’s on their trunks instead of in it… nice.
Not surprisingly, the National Organization for Women is having a field day with KFC’s latest campaign, slash media controversy, slash chicken pimping.
Last week, NOW President Terry O’Neill told USA Today, “It’s so obnoxious to once again be using women’s bodies to sell fundamentally unhealthy products.” O’Neill went on to add that KFC should really be focusing on marketing to women, who make more than half the decisions regarding food for dinner.
Not for nothing, but Spalding is a Catholic school located in Louisville, and is currently the only college KFC has been able to rope into its crazy chicken stunt.
You have to wonder what the parents of the participating girls think about their daughters parading around town with the words “Double Down” broadcast on their behinds.
Not exactly Christian-like behavior and certainly not worth 500 bucks if it contributes to the demoralization of young females.
What’s more, you know that the girls that are willing to strut their stuff with the words “Double Down” have likely never even gotten close to wrapping their lips around the real deal.
KFC’s Double Down weighs in at 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and – wait for it — 1,380 milligrams of sodium. The restaurant chain also offers a grilled version that mysteriously is just as bad and has more sodium: 460 calories, 23 grams of fat and 1,430 milligrams of sodium.
What college-aged female is going to down one of those on a regular basis?
Would you allow your daughter to rent out her behind to advertise these heart attack sandwiches?
