My first experience with talking about food storage to someone who was not a member of the church came just after 9-11. She pulled me aside to let me know that she had purchased extra groceries just in case something happened. She was quite proud of herself, but then she went on to explain the other ways and reasons that she purchased in bulk and in advance. She felt that food storage was a good thing especially for the disasters that may come in our lives.
She was right, but sometimes people look at our food storage and provident living program and think of it as only as preparing for the huge earth shattering disasters that may occur. You know the entire doomsday end of the world scenarios. This happens both within and outside of members of the church. Food storage and provident living is not just about preparing for those big emergencies. It’s about preparing for the little bumps in the road as well.
With the recent onslaught of increased unemployment, it makes sense that we were counseled a few years ago to get our houses in order. The counsel included getting out of debt, increasing and preparing our food storage as well as focusing more on provident living. As the price of food increased with the price of oil over the last year, preparing this way could help you make your current dollars cover more money. It could also prepare you for the possibility of a job loss.
The Lord has issued counsel concerning food storage and preparedness. Each family has received that counsel and should go about following it in the way that is right for each family. The important thing is to start to do it today. Little things such as couponing can make it easier to purchase food storage. Food storage should encompass all of the foods that you eat, not just wheat and flour. It should also be rotated regularly, and used in your diet so that your family can adjust easily to living on it.
