Modern conveniences are all very well and many make life easier. But sometimes I wonder about some of them. One in particular which is a staple appliance in most homes has come under criticism. It is the microwave oven.
I remember when Microwaves first came out, there were a lot of rumors and people were wary about whether they were safe. It took me a long time to warm to the idea of a microwave and I’ve only ever used it in an emergency to defrost the meat or to cook vegetables.
Then this week I was directed by someone to this site and I have to admit I’m having second thoughts about the microwave again. In fact I haven’t used it since I read the article and I’m thinking seriously about getting rid of it all together as it’s taking up room anyway for something that gets used so rarely.
Some of the points raised in the article say that those rays that zap the food change molecules in the food and make it dangerous to the blood and immune systems. It went on to catalogue ways in which the microwave was a danger to our health. Ways in which this happened were:
Blood hemoglobin (which is the important oxygen-carrying component of the blood) decreased after eating foods that had been microwaved.
The white blood cell count increased. This is what happens when an infection occurs.
Bad cholesterol increased while the good cholesterols went down
Cancer-causing agents in food went up and there were higher incidences of digestive system cancers.
Given the number of people who have had cancer of some kind, which has increased significantly over recent years, I can’t help but wonder about the microwave oven.
Pregnant women are urged to avoid it. There must be a reason. Yep, I think mine will be going out. Overreacting? I don’t think so. I’ll be interested to hear anyone else’s thoughts when you’ve read the article.
