It Pays to Think Like a Thief

left

Especially when you are traveling abroad.

Millions of Americans will be jetting off on summer vacations to foreign countries in the coming weeks. Europe is expected to be an especially hot travel destination as it hosts the Summer Olympic Games this July.

Whether you are traveling to London, Hong Kong, Rome or South America this summer (or any time of year) you don’t want your vacation to be spoiled by a thief. Unsavory characters prey on vulnerable tourists, but there are ways you can avoid becoming a target. Some safety tips to consider include:

Pickpocket Prevention: Don’t underestimate a petty thief. Many disguise themselves as beggars or even businessmen, while others travel in groups and work as a team to rip you off. One of the most common tactics used by multiple pickpockets is to team up with another thief and while one is chatting you up the other will sneak behind you and pilfer your wallet. To prevent this, consider investing in a money belt that fits under your clothes just beneath your waistband. It keeps your money out of your pockets and away from thieves prying hands.

Protect Your Purse: Some thieves use bicycles as a vehicle to help facilitate their crime. If you plan to wear a purse in public, place the strap across your body rather than hanging it off one shoulder. This prevents biker thieves from slipping the strap off your shoulder as you walk along foreign streets.

Do Your Homework: It is impossible to expect all travelers become fluent in the language of the country they are visiting; however, it doesn’t take too much effort to be aware of your surroundings. Some small shop owners prey on customers who don’t speak the language well or who aren’t familiar with the local currency. To avoid being overcharged for an item keep an eye on the cash register and pay the exact amount. A thief can’t keep your change if you pay the exact amount of money. If you are owed change, count it immediately after the clerk hands it to you to ensure it is correct before leaving the store.
