Here is a great little recipe that is full of flavor. If you don’t have a bread machine, you can always make this bread by hand.
When you think of Italian bread, you probably picture a long white roll of white-type bread that has a nice crispy outside and a fluffy middle. While I love traditional italian bread, this recipe produces something a little different. This is a soft bread that takes its flavor from traditional Italian herbs. It is fragrant and wonderful; a very savory bread.
I first made this bread to use up some fresh Italian oregano that was starting to overtake its container, and I’ve used that excuse to make this bread whenever I can. You can of course substitute dried herbs, but use fresh whenever possible. The general herb conversion is 1 teaspoon of dried to every tablespoon of fresh, with the exception of the oregano. In that case, you will need 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano to 2 teaspoons of fresh.
To make a one pound loaf, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup of water
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of clover honey
- 1 teaspoon of sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic (or about one clove crushed)
- 2 teaspoons of minced fresh Italian oregano
- 1 table of minced fresh basil
- 2 tablespoons of minced fresh parsley
- 1 tablespoon of dry (powdered milk)
- 3 tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese
- 1-1/4 cups of wheat flour
- 1-1/4 cups of bread flour.
- 1 package of active dried yeast
Directions:
- Place the ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed or in the order that is recommended by your bread machine manufacturer.
- Select the whole wheat mode with a medium crust.
- Enjoy the bread warm or at room temperature.
