A great time to rotate your emergency kits is conference weekend. Many of the supplies that you store in your emergency kit are best rotated every six months. You can use the snack food as treats while you watch conference. You can also use the time to rotate the clothes from clothing for warm weather to clothing for cooler weather.
While you are looking at your food supplies, check to see if your medication and first aid supplies need to be updated. This is fairly easy to do. If you do not have your entire kit together you can add something to a basic kit each year. For example you may purchase a small camping stove this fall and in the spring buy a backpacking tent.
While you are thinking of your emergency preparedness, now is a great time to check on your other outdoor supplies. You can make sure that your generator is in good condition. You may want to make sure that your cars are ready for winter. While you do this, check to see if your car emergency kit needs to be updated as well. You can check around the house for anything you may need as well. It is a great time to stock up on firewood as well.
You may want to include some items to spiritually uplift your family as well. You can include a set of scriptures and CDs of church music to listen to. Additionally you may want to pack items for your children to do if you are stuck in a shelter somewhere.
Ideally you will accomplish these tasks between conference sessions, as you do need to focus on your spiritual preparedness this weekend. You may challenge your children to focus on a problem or question that they have to see if it is answered during conference. Enjoy the weekend!
