Yesterday I wrote about how important it is to take care of yourself. We all know that as mom’s we put ourselves last, as single moms sometimes we don’t even make the list. We need to be better about this, we are important and deserve to do things that make us feel good, even if they seem like trivial things.
What women doesn’t love a day of beauty? I don’t know many who would turn one down but as a single mom it’s hard to schedule one and even harder to justify spending the money. Who needs a manicure when there are braces to pay for?
It’s time to take a little time for yourself. I know it sounds selfish but a day of beauty will do incredible things for your self esteem and your mood. If you are fortunate enough to have an ex who takes the kids for the weekend, it will be a little easier to schedule, if not, find someone to keep the kids for a couple of hours.
If you can find a friend to share your day of beauty, even better. Make a list of the things you would like to do for yourself, color your hair, get a trim, get your eyebrows waxed, get a manicure and a pedicure. Those things can quickly add up but if you do most of them at home, the cost goes way down.
Check out beauty schools in your area. Hailey and I have used them for years and they are very reasonable and the instructors are really good. The students take a little longer to cut your hair but the result is a great cut and some time spent being pampered. They also will wax your eyebrows and do manicures and pedicures inexpensively.
If money is really tight skip the beauty school. Spend the day with a friend, you can color each others hair, give advice to each other about eyebrow shape while your plucking them and share a cup of coffee while you paint your nails. It’s not Hollywood but girl time and pampering yourself will make you feel like a million bucks.
It’s also important that our kids see that we take care of ourselves as well, and it’s ok. When my daughter is a mother I want her to remember that she is still important and if painting her nails makes her feel pretty and pampered, I hope she doesn’t feel guilty for taking the time to do it.
