Jack’s Big Music Show

Jack loves to go to his backyard clubhouse and play music. Every day he goes there and meets his friend Mary and his dog Mel. They just jam on their instruments and have a great time. This is the premise for “Jack’s Big Music Show” on NOGGIN network. “Jack’s Big Music Show” is a great way to help encourage a child’s appreciation for music and to help them learn about different musical instruments and styles.

The first time I watched “Jack’s Big Music Show” with my daughter probably about six months ago. We had just subscribed to digital cable and she absolutely loved watching NOGGIN in the mornings. When the show came on, it had a catchy theme and cute puppet characters. I recognized the voice of Jack as the same person who does the voice of Baby Bear on “Sesame Street.” I figured if it had a close tie with “Sesame Street” that it couldn’t be all that bad. Well, I was right.

From the time the theme started, my daughter was shaking her little tush and clapping her hands. As soon as the song was over, she plopped herself down next to me and was completely enthralled for the next twenty minutes. IN the episode that we watched, Jack’s friend Mary gets a seed that she wants to watch grow into a flower. She learns that music can sometimes help plants grow, so Mary, Jack, and Mel experiment with different kinds of music. All of these types of music help the plant — which Mary has named Arthur — to grow, but he just won’t blossom. Finally, their friend Cathy (human) comes into the clubhouse and announces that her plant is a Daddy-o flower and needs Jazz music to grow. Well, Mary, Jack, and Mel don’t know how to play Jazz music so Cathy teaches them. Arthur sways to the Jazz and blossoms into a great big Daddy-o flower.

I was really impressed at the way Cathy described to the characters how to play Jazz music. For example, when she tells Mel how to play his drums, she says to make them “hiss” and then makes the sound for him. As she instructs Jack how to play his bass, she sings out the tune with a bass sound to her voice. When it’s Mary’s turn to play her saxophone, Cathy imitates the sound of the sax when giving Mary a tune to play.

Sometime in the middle of the episode, there is usually a music video. Children’s music star Laurie Berkner is often featured, along with groups Milkshake and Music for Aardvarks.

“Jack’s Big Music Show” is a musical adventure that your child will love. Being musically inclined, I am ecstatic to see a show that encourages my daughter to love music. I bet you and your child will find it “super swell!”
