It’s the end of January, which means checking in to see how you are doing with your New Year’s Resolutions. Not everyone includes housekeeping in their list of things to change but this blog might get you thinking about it.
The biggest thing I had on my mind for the year 2012 was to cook more often for my family. I am happy to say that I have adopted a meal plan that is really working. It feels so good to accomplish something.
But at the same time, I know that I need to address other areas in my home, those hidden areas that I constantly talk about getting to. I even put these terrific plans in place to make it happen but well…other things become much more important.
One of the areas that I have mentioned getting to is our linen closet. It’s called a linen closet but it houses so much more than our linens. It also holds school supplies, games, beauty supplies, candles and the list goes on.
This past Sunday I was relaxing and somewhat dozing off in our family room. It was one of those busy weekends where I was up late Friday and Saturday night, so I had no energy on Sunday. I finally crawled out from under my blanket and made my way upstairs.
My dining room table and all of the chairs were covered with stuff. Apparently my daughter wanted to earn some extra money so she asked my husband for a job to do. He gave her the task of organizing the linen closet.
I knew it was a mess but when I saw it all out there in the open, I was overwhelmed. How many new razors had I purchased when all along we had about 20 of them? How many bottles of shampoo did I unnecessarily spend money on when we had 5 of them? And why did I have so many votive candles?
I knew my daughter had quite an undertaking and I think she was starting to regret her decision to make money this way. In the end, I left her to the task and went back downstairs to be a couch potato again.
She didn’t finish the job. She organized a couple of the shelves but there are still three more that are in dire need of help. But she gave me a good head start. It made me realize how much money I have probably wasted on things we already had. I suspect the same is true when it comes to my kitchen. My cabinets are just as bad, yet I keep buying more things.
So now my goal is not only to get these areas organized but to come up with a plan on how I can keep inventory of our supplies so I am spending wisely. Do you have any goals for this year when it comes to housekeeping?
