Jared vs. Ronald = Parent Win

In the battle for your fast food dollar it looks like Subway’s Jared just K.O.-ed Ronald, Grimace and the Hamburglar.

Score one for the sandwich chain… and parents everywhere.

According to a new report, Subway is now the largest kid on the restaurant block. The iconic symbol of fast eats is getting schooled by Subway, which reportedly operates a whopping 33,749 stores worldwide compared to McDonald’s 32,737. What’s more, the popular sandwich shop is continuing its world domination by expanding its outlets in developing countries. It has about 200 stores in China so far, but company officials predict that number will double by year’s end, given that Subway can easily sandwich its stores in gas stations, Wal-Mart locations and other outlets.

So does this mean the end of Happy Meals and Big Macs? Hardly. Experts point out that Ronald and crew still make more money than Subway. According to reports, the hamburger joint raked in $24 billion in 2010 compared to Subway’s $15 billion.

I guess those $5 foot longs are taking a swipe at the sandwich shop’s bottom line.

Still, parents say they fully support Subway’s healthy menu options and would love to break the spell Ronald has over their kids.

Personally, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. For starters, Subway’s National Geographic reusable kids’ meal bags don’t have quite the same wow factor as McDonald’s splashy cardboard Happy Meal boxes (even though moms love the idea of Subway’s eco-friendly totes). Then, there’s the whole French fry issue. Whereas my 6-year-old loves her a Subway turkey breast sandwich, I always get an earful about the chain’s lack of French fries. She doesn’t quite grasp that Subway Fresh Fit for Kids Meals are so named for a reason.

Fortunately, the battle between Jared and Ronald is long from over, so if you are a Subway fan, and you are trying to get your kids to cross over from the greasy side, hang in there. Sandwich shop big wigs say they plan to win the war for dominance one store at a time.

Do your kids prefer Subway to McDonald’s?
