Jason McElwain Hits the Big Time… the REALLY Big Time

Most of you remember, MUST remember, the story of Jason McElwain, an autistic high schooler who became a national sensation when he scored six astonishing three point shots in the final minutes of his team’s last game of the season. It had been the first time he was even allowed to suit up and play, due to his size and his disability. But Jason surprised everyone when he performed like a pro. Maybe better than a pro.

Basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who watched Jason’s amazing basketball debut, later commented that it was a feat “nearly impossible” for even a seasoned pro to accomplish. And Jason is autistic.

The Hollywood Reporter quoted Magic Johnson as saying, “When I first saw the highlights on ESPN and then heard Jason’s back story, I said, ‘Man, I’ve got to be part of this.’ This story touched me, my kids, my wife,” he said. “When we go to the movies, this is the type of story we want to see.”

And they will. Columbia Pictures has just purchased the life rights to Jason McElwain, and have cut a major movie deal. Magic Johnson will serve as Executive Producer.

The now infamous Jason McElwain, or “J-Mac,” as he has been nicknamed, will have his story told on the big screen, for the entire world to see. He also made a recent appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, which as we know is the hallmark of fame. The show aired Tuesday April 25th, and the topic was “little geniuses.” Jason came out onto the stage to thunderous applause, and the audience viewed a re-cap of his incredible basketball feat. His coach, Jim Johnson, seated in the front of the audience, talked about his surprise and overwhelming emotion while Jason’s miracle game unfolded.

Coach Johnson has said, “I’ve had a lot of thrills in coaching. I’ve coached a lot of wonderful kids. But I’ve never experienced such a thrill.”
