Here’s the deal: no matter how many photos they posed for locked in loving embraces; no matter how many times they expressed their undying affection for one another in interviews; and certainly, no matter how many times she died her hair to match his, I never once believed that Jessica Simpson and John Mayer’s romance was the real deal.
Now I can gloat.
According to news reports, the popular singers have broken up. Sure, there was an addendum tacked to the report that read: “perhaps not for good,” but I know better and here’s why.
First, if you watched even a millisecond of Simpson’s MTV reality show “Newlyweds” (which she starred with her ex-husband Nick Lachey) you know that she is high, high maintenance, and frankly, needy. In fact, I seem to recall an interview she did on Oprah where she actually admitted as much.
Then you’ve got Mayer, a 29-year-old free spirit who admitted in an interview that he is a closet techie that loves to spend his free time tinkering with digital toys. Never mind that Simpson had to take remedial courses to learn how to use a Blackberry.
Okay, that one difference does not a doomed relationship make—but have you ever seen the myriad of photos that have been taken of the two? I’ve seen quite a few, and honestly, their “affectionate” poses seemed forced. I’m sure it doesn’t help that Simpson’s ex is now living with his girlfriend (and if you believe some tabloids, soon-to-be fiancée) Vanessa Minnillo. I’m sure Simpson felt the pressure to be seen in public with someone after all that has been written about Lachey’s serious relationship.
But, back to the report that insinuated that the couple’s split may be temporary. According to a source close to the pair, “Jessica and John have broken up and gotten back together at least 10 times before.”
Personally, I’m thinking that’s not a good sign and use it to further my case.
According to another source, despite the reported parting of ways, the pair is in constant contact – even as Simpson promotes her new film in France and Mayer is stateside.
“They talk to each other at least six times a day. I don’t know if this breakup is permanent, but for right now they are broken up, but I’m sure they will get back together,” said the source.
As for why the two singers split, a friend of Mayer’s told PEOPLE magazine, “John did say that he broke up [with Jessica]. He said that it was because he was just over it.” Mayer’s friend went on to say: “John’s definitely not looking for someone right now.”
What’s more, the magazine also reported that Mayer didn’t appear to be taking the split too hard on Thursday. Apparently, the rocker stayed out until nearly 4 a.m. partying with friends at a New York nightclub. Meanwhile, Simpson was just photographed last night with a new do–her hair is blond again–a drastic change from the dark brown she had it colored to match Mayer’s hair during their time together.
Seems only time will tell if the couple will reunite, but for now I’ll continue to gloat.
