Joint Exercises

Joint inflammation can be caused by many things especially arthritis. One of the most known forms of arthritis affects older adults which is called osteoarthritis, the “degenerative joint disease.”

Osteoarthritis can occur just from the normal everyday things we do as we grow older. From walking, bending, or sitting, some people are more prone to developing joint pains.
Being overweight, having bad posture, or hurting yourself prior can all be factors when trying to find the cause of arthritis and joint pain.

The cartilage is in between the bones and this begins to wear away causing the bones to hit into each other. Cartilage acts as a cushioner and as we get older, our bodies begin to break it down and the protection our joints once had is now diminishing.

This entire process causes the pain we feel in our bodies, sometimes from certain sports and the pounding of our bodies has caused joint pains as an older adult. Other times it could be a lack of a certain vitamin or supplement; each person’s body is different and you should check with your individual doctor to find the cause.

A few exercises which can help joint pain and make life bearable to move are listed below.

Bicycle riding: This exercise is gentle on the joints and can be done by all aged people. It can be done on a recumbent bicycle, stationary bike, speed, mountain, and the many choices to just get the knees and entire body up and out.

Yoga: Stretching and relaxation are both very important to joint pain. The body must continue to be limber and feel loose otherwise the tightening of joint can be detrimental to many arthritis sufferers. The recommended amount of stretching is at least a half an hour, two or three times a week, but every day is even better, if only for a short period of time.

Inactivity causes many of the older aged person’s illnesses.

Stair climbing: Did you ever think walking up and down stairs to be a form of exercise? It is and one of the most important ways to strengthen the bones, muscles and joints of your lower body. This exercise can be done anywhere as stairs are everywhere, and they’re free!

Swimming: Due to your body weight being supported by the water, many more exercises can be done in a pool over dry land. Even if you can’t swim, just moving your entire body around in the water keeps joints loose and your body pain free.

Painful joints can be tough and make a person not want to exercise but with a little patience and motivation, your joint pain can be a thing of the past.
