That’s what happens isn’t it? We gain a few pounds here and a few pounds there and we’re no longer in the realm of healthy. A few pounds here and there isn’t that bad. Why? Because it’s only a couple. No one bats an eye lash when you go from 135 to 137. Then maybe the next year you go from 137 to 139. . .and well, you see the pattern.
And just how do you gain a couple of pounds here and there? By slowly changing your habits. Lots of college freshman gain the “freshman 15” because no one is there to supervise their snacking, or because they’re drinking soda is mass quantities, or because they’re so busy studying they forget to exercise. Pick one–any one will do.
So how do you take weight off that has crept onto your thighs, rear end and gut? By slowly changing your habits one at a time. I know we are all anxious to begin our weight loss journeys. We wake up one morning and decide this is the day! This is the day I’m going to change my life and ditch all those bad habits. So we forgo the donut and put skim milk in our coffee. We start drinking water and we forsake soda. For a few weeks, maybe even a few months we are super good and we stick to our diet. (I have to say here that the more radical the diet is, the less amount of time we tend to stick with it.)
But the real trick, in my opinion, is to find ways to sneak in losing weight by changing one small habit at a time. One glass of water per day isn’t what you should be drinking, but if you weren’t drinking any glasses of water, one per day is a good start. And you can easily stick to that goal. Maybe you need to limit your sweets rather than cutting them out. Maybe you need to eat more vegetables and fruits. Whatever it is, the smaller the goal, the easier it is to achieve.
Achieving small goals will not cause you to drop pounds quickly. What it will cause you to do however, is shed pounds and consistently build habits that will help you keep those pounds off!
