As much as we hate to admit it, we’re just mortals. We have limitations, we have aching backs, sometimes our feet are killing us at the end of the day. We get headaches. We run out of steam.
There are days when we leap out of bed, read our scriptures, prepare a wonderful breakfast for the whole clan, get all the laundry done, our visiting teaching calls made, knit a sweater, and make bread all before noon. Then there are days when it’s all we can do to roll over and glare at the alarm clock. We feel as though we’ve accomplished nothing all day, and when we climb into bed that night, we think, “Well, at least all the children are still alive and didn’t murder each other.”
There’s no need to feel guilty about this. It happens because we’re human.
Hormonal changes, shifts in the weather, reactions to foods we’ve eaten, lack of sleep, and undernourishment all play a huge factor in our levels of energy and ability to focus. Exhaustion also plays a huge role. Sometimes we just chug along at top speed doing everything for everyone and then suddenly, our systems shut down and we have to take it easy for a couple of days. Again, no need to feel guilty about this – it’s our bodies’ way of telling us that we need to slow down.
The trick is to do the best we can every day. If your best for today is to bottle fourteen quarts of tomatoes, sew a pickle costume for your second grader and make pizza for the whole neighborhood, then that’s great. If your best for today is handing your husband a matching pair of socks, then that’s great. As long as we’re doing what we can, we’re still in the game. No one is keeping score. No one is counting how many homemade meals you concocted. What is being counted is desire and intent of the heart. If your intent is to give your family love and care all the days of their lives, it doesn’t matter if they get out of the house with one red ponytail holder and one purple one. What matters is that they feel your love, and they can feel that just fine as you sit down on the couch and put your feet up, which is what you really need to do sometimes.
