In every married life there needs to be times you do something just for fun. Yesterday we had one of those days – a family time of picnic and time for the adults to chat while keeping an eye on grandchildren playing in the park. After that we headed off to a medieval fair.
Three generations went. Mick and I our son and his two children (unfortunately after finding out about the medieval fair our daughter-in-law was too ill to come) and our daughter and her husband, gathered with hundreds of other people at Winterfest.
We watched mock battles between Saxons and Vikings and other incidents of sword play and combat. The three generations of females were all happy to inspect the Celtic jewelry and handcrafted leather journal covers among other things. Our granddaughter was fascinated by the mood rings. I remember our daughter being similarly entranced by their changes of color when she was a child.
The guys inspected the amour and the weaponry, and tried on a helmet, marveling at how heavy it was. It made us all wonder hat sort of weight the knights much have carried around in their amour.
A highlight for our adult son was watching the young woman with her peregrine falcon that swooped over the crowd in a flying display, followed by another demonstration with another raptor. Being partial to owls I loved seeing the owl and would have liked a close up photo but sadly it was not to be.
I did end up taking lots of photos of the jousting. The crowd got really involved as we all picked and cheered for our champion and cheered for him or her. Yes, her. Feminism was alive and well here as they had two women jousting as well as two men and let me tell you the women won the joust.
It made me think I’m glad Mick doesn’t have to endanger his life and go out on the battle field or joust to prove his strength and courage as they did in medieval times. It must have been very hard to watch the one you love risk their life in such a way.
Our grandson’s favorite activity was getting a chance to wield a sword. With a lunge he plunged it into an apple hanging from a pole. Our granddaughter liked patting the huge wedge tailed eagle. The feathers are soft as velvet. She also liked seeing the ladies win the jousting and cheering her female champion on to win.
All in all it was a relaxing and fun family time. It was lovely to see so many families outside enjoying a beautiful Sydney winter’s sun-filled day.
After a fun day it was good to come home and relax, just the two of us. When Mick and I went to bed that night I whispered that I was glad he was my knight, even if he doesn’t have the shining armor. I glad I’m still his lady.
