Today on Rachael Ray’s show, she had Dr. Timothy Brantley on her show. He is the author of The Cure: Heal your body, save your life. He gave some helpful ways in which food helps us when we are sick or to prevent illnesses. He went over a few that I thought was interesting. Here they are:
Lemons are a great food to keep on hand. Lemon improves your liver function. The liver helps to clean your blood. He suggests drinking 1/4 of a lemon in warm water to maintain the health of your liver.
Potatoes are a great food to make you sleep better. It depends on what you add to it. After eating a potato, your body produces insulin that releases the amino acid called Tryptophan which creates serotonin that calms you. This is the same amino acid that is in Turkey.
Instead of grabbing a can of pop, try this first. We all drink pop usually for the caffeine that raises our energy level and allows us to continue throughout the day. The problem with this kind of energy boost, is it doesn’t last long and our energy level will “crash” suddenly. The doctor recommends that we try this:
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of raw honey, all natural.
a sprinkle of raw chocolate powder
a sprinkle of cinnamon
Take this mixture every day for two weeks to notice a difference. He recommends the middle of the day. This is when most people start to feel tired and drained. Your energy level will last for 4-5 hours before wearing off.
We all know that oatmeal is good for us. Dr.Brantley also says that it gives you sustained energy because it is slow releasing. He recommends adding nuts to it for added benefits.
For women: To improve your hormone functions, try adding raw coconut oil to your oatmeal. You can find this oil at a health food store.
For Men: To improve prostate health, try adding walnuts to their diet.
Pineapple is good but did you know that it breaks down the fats in your food and prevents the fat from getting stored in the body? Try squeezing it into your diet. Rachael suggests that you add pineapple to pizza.
To protect yourself from the flu this season, stay away from foods that are processed and refined sugars. They lower the oxygen in your body leaving you susceptible to parasites, viruses and infections.
Use raw unrefined sea salt for sore throats, nasal congestion and ear infection. Put salt in warm water and gargle to relieve throat pain. For ear infections, turn your head to one side and drop a couple of drops of warm water and sea salt in your ear. To help nasal congestion, block one nostril and snort up the sea salt and water mixture. He said that your eyes will water and so will your nose, but it will take care of the infection.
Finally, for better skin, he recommended blueberries. They are high in antioxidants and they help eliminate dry skin. Also, wild salmon is rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. These acids help feed nutrients to your skin giving you healthier skin all over.
Here are some recipes that include some items listed above.
