Just When I Think I Understand Them…

I’ve had my dogs, Moose and Lally, for a few years now. Lally joined the family in September 2003; Moose was adopted in January 2004. But just when I think I know them pretty well and can guess what they’re going to do… they surprise me.

A good friend of mine bought a pair of cushy beds for her dogs, only to find that the dogs weren’t fond of them. She gave one of the beds to me in the hopes that I could reclaim my sleeping bag from Moose and Lally. And let me tell you — this is a nice bed. It’s big enough that I could lay on it if I’m curled on my side. It’s soft. It’s got a water-resistant cover.

I spread the bed out on the floor in the office last night and waited. Lally came in to check things out first (Moose was already flopped out on the couch). She sniffed. She stepped on. She looked like she was starting to sit down.

She wasn’t sitting — she was squatting.

Yes, my special girl squatted and piddled on the brand new bed. I couldn’t believe it! It immediately brought to mind the very first day I brought Lally home. She ran into the house, jumped up on my bed, and piddled. What a first impression! Apparently the new bed didn’t make a great first impression on her.

I tossed it into the wash and tried again today. I put the new bed in the same spot, but this time I covered it with the sleeping bag. And I kept a very close eye on Lally when she went to check it out.

This time, she curled right up and went to sleep.

I love my dogs. They always keep me guessing! Of course, I’d much rather they surprised me with things that didn’t involve cleaning up piddle…
