Ah, what is a music ceremony without Kanye West acting up? It all started in 2004, when he lost the AMA Best New Artist award to Gretchen Wilson. He stormed out of the ceremony saying, “I left like I was definitely robbed…” Then at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards, he interrupted Justice and Simian’s acceptance speech, insisting his video should have won the award because it “cost a million dollars and Pamela Anderson was in it.”
As for the 2007 awards, Kanye suggested that he was not chosen to do the opening performance for the show because “maybe my skin’s not right.” He said that MTV used Britney Spears, who he said hadn’t had a hit in a long time, as the opening act to garner ratings for the show. He was also upset that year that he didn’t win any of the five awards for which he had been nominated. After losing two years in a row, Kanye promised he wouldn’t attend the award show again…ever.
Well, apparently “ever” isn’t that long a time because MTV had its 2009 VMA ceremony last night and Kanye was there. Boy, was he there.
After Taylor Swift was named the winner of the Best Female Video category, she began to give her acceptance speech. Just a few sentences into it, Kanye took the microphone from her and said “”I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.”
Taylor looked obviously stunned and flustered by the incident and when the camera cut to Beyonce in the audience, she mouthed “Oh my God.” The crowd immediately started booing Kanye.
Beyonce showed real class by calling Taylor on stage with her when she won the Video of the Year award. She said she remembered being 17 years old and on stage with Destiny’s Child, so she wanted Taylor to come out and have her moment. Taylor and Beyonce hugged after Taylor thanked her fans.
Kanye issued an apology on his web page, saying he was “SOOOOO SORRY” for interrupting Taylor. He also said “I’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment.” Of course, he did add that “Beyonce’s video was the best of this decade.” He said he was sorry if he let his fans down and said he was very happy for Taylor and was sincerely sorry.”
What do you think? Are the award shows just Kanye’s world and we can only watch them or is he a spoiled brat that is ruining his career with the outbursts?
