As the days grow warmer, we all want to spend more time outside! But remember that your pets may be at risk for heat-related health problems.
Think your pets can’t get sunburn? You’re wrong! Lightly colored pets (especially those with white fur) are at more risk of sunburn than dark colored dogs. And just like in humans, long-term sun damage can lead to skin cancer. Try to limit the amount of time your pet spends in the sun — even basking in a sunny window can lead to a burn! Keep an eye on your pet’s delicate ears, nose, and eyelids. If you see the skin becoming discolored or sores appearing, call your vet.
The type of dog you have can make him more susceptible to heat injury and heat stroke. If you have a large, double-coated breed like a husky or Newfoundland, they were probably designed more for life in a cold climate than a hot one. You may want to have a groomer give your double-coated dog a summer buzz cut, to help ease the heat. Don’t have them shaved to the skin; that could lead to sunburn or other skin problems.
If you have a shorter-faced dog like a pug or bulldog, you may see that your dog has trouble with heat, too. Their shorter respiratory systems may not cope as well with high heat and humidity.
The heat becomes a problem if your dog’s temperature rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Just a few minutes outside in the heat can tax your dog’s normal cooling mechanisms (like panting) beyond the body’s ability to handle. Try to keep your dog indoors during the worst heat of the day, and limit exercise time when the weather gets too hot.
When your pup is outside, make sure he has access to shade and lots of fresh water. If your dog enjoys playing in water, you can provide a kiddie pool for him to soak in. Don’t fill the pool higher than your dog’s head, though. If your dog likes the hose, you can spritz him to help him keep cool. (Moosie loves the hose, especially chasing the water and trying to bite it.)
Please don’t EVER leave your dog in a car. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside your car can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit in just minutes.
