Keeping Kids Busy During the Big Game

The Pro Bowl kicks off tomorrow, then a week later, NFL’s biggest game of the year, the Super Bowl, will touch down in living rooms around the world. The Super Bowl is like Christmas for many football fans. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends with parties, food and music. Super Bowl viewing parties, tailgating shindigs, and halftime hoedowns are just some of the many festivities that mark Super Bowl Sunday.

If you’re partying with kids, then you’ll want to include food and activities that they’ll enjoy as well. After all, there are some children who would rather be anywhere BUT a Super Bowl viewing party.

The following are some ideas that you can use to make your Super Bowl party kid-friendly:

FOOTBALL PLAYER COOKIES

Set up a table and fill it with the following ingredients, then let kids decorate their own Football Player Cookies:

Ingredients:

Large, soft sugar or oatmeal cookies

Frosting

Food coloring

M&M Minis

Black decorator gel

Black licorice

Directions:

Spread a thin layer of frosting on a large, soft cookie.

Cut a square from a second cookie to create a helmet shape and set it on top of the first cookie.

Coat the helmet with frosting tinted the color of your favorite team.

Use M&M Minis for the eyes, then dot each with black decorator’s gel for pupils.

Add a string of black licorice for the facemask, and then place two more M&M Minis for the ear holes on the helmet.

Kids of all ages love Potato Chip Chicken. It will be a welcome addition to a buffet filled with adult favorites.

POTATO CHIP CHICKEN

Ingredients:

1 bag of potato chips (10 to 12 ounces), crushed

1 (16-ounce) container of chip dip (Ranch or French Onion)

1 cup milk

1 whole cut-up fryer chicken, or 8 to 12 pieces bone-in chicken

Salt and pepper

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions:

Season chicken with salt and pepper.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Whisk together milk and dip.

Dip chicken in dip mixture, then coat with potato chips.

Place coated chicken on greased, foil lined cookie sheet. Bake chicken for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 375 and bake another 30 minutes.

While chicken is baking, melt butter, then add garlic powder.

Return oven temperature to 450 and brush garlic butter over each piece of chicken and bake for an extra 5 to 10 minutes or until chicken is golden brown and juices run clear.
