Before I got married, I shared an apartment with a roommate. She would let out a scream of delight and I’d come running every time the “What a Difference a Day Makes” commercials from C&R would come on. Does anyone else remember those? They featured men at work, then cleaned up in a suit and nice dress shirt. Viva le difference! It’s amazing what clothes will do for a man.
If your husband is like mine, however, he hates to actually do the shopping for them, and will go to great lengths to avoid it. Paul will wear pretty much whatever I pick out for him (okay, he passed on the Gap sweater, but other than that…) as long as he doesn’t have to go and try it on. It was frustrating to see such a handsome guy wear such plain clothes when I knew that with a little help, he could go quickly from geek to chic. I finally got him to spend a couple of hours at a high-end department store, having the personal shopper fit him and give him ideas on what worked best. We bought a couple of shirts, some pants, a belt, and a tie. We got much more than that – we got an education.
The shopper knew what she was talking about. Since I have no sense of style whatsoever, it was a valuable encounter. I made notes and wrote down exactly what sizes he wears and which fits to buy. We went through his closet and took out everything that wasn’t the right size, and donated it to the thrift shop. I’ve been slowly adding pieces as I find good deals. This is one of them.
