My young daughter loves to cook. At 5 years old she is quite the little chef. She is remarkably skilled with various kitchen utensils and her cutting capabilities are quite impressive, so when she recently had the chance to help my mom create a late morning Sunday spread for our entire family she jumped at the chance.
Knowing that my daughter was going to lend a hand in the brunch preparation my mom chose simple kid-friendly recipes. The following dishes may be easy to prepare, but they certainly are not simplistic in taste or texture:
MONKEY BREAD
Ingredients:
4 cans refrigerated biscuits
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 sticks butter
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons cinnamon
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a bundt pan.
Mix white sugar and cinnamon in a medium sized plastic bag.
Cut the biscuits in quarters and place six to eight biscuit pieces in the sugar cinnamon mix. Shake well.
Arrange pieces in the bottom of the greased pan. Continue layering until all the biscuit pieces are coated and fit nicely in the pan.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter with the brown sugar over medium heat. Boil for 1 minute. Pour over the layered biscuits.
Bake for 35 minutes.
Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, and then turn out onto a serving plate.
EASY BREAKFAST BAKE
Ingredients:
8 ounces refrigerated crescent rolls
4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
4 eggs
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons onion, chopped fine
8 slices cooked bacon, coarsely chopped
Salt and pepper
Chopped parsley
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Separate and press crescent dough into a lightly greased 9 by 13-inch pan.
Press into bottom and 1-inch up each side of pan.
Place 2 cups cheese over the dough, and save the rest for later.
In a bowl, combine eggs, milk, onion, salt and pepper. Pour mixture over cheese. Sprinkle with bacon. Top with remaining cheese. Cover loosely with foil.
Bake for an hour or until done.
Garnish with parsley before serving.
