Kidney Check Up

My husband had a doctor’s appointment today with his nephrologist (kidney doctor)t\o follow up on his kidney disease. Today we will get the results of his latest blood test that will check his kidney function. The results are in our diet changes has definitely helped his creatine levels have gone down and they are estimating his one remaining kidney is functioning about 60 percent. Considering it was originally designed to only work 50 percent 60 is great. His high blood pressure is definitely under control 115/65!

The doctor is a bit concerned with some swelling in his legs so they are adding a diuretic to help get the fluid out. He will have more labs drawn in another 2 weeks and then he does not have to follow up again until August. The nephrologist is totally shocked by how well he is doing getting his levels down and keeping his blood pressure in control.

I think this is amazing, given his diet before he got diagnosed with kidney disease I did not know if he would be able to stick to it and he has. He is finally appreciating my being so demanding when it comes to it. He was actually smiling leaving the doctor today I was too.

This just goes to show that if you try you can change. He was feeling so defeated when he heard the original diagnosis. He was feeling that dialysis was in his near future, then kidney transplant list and hopefully a donor would be available. Today he is thinking if he loses 2 % of his function per year and he would not do dialysis until it got to about 25% he has a good 15 years at least before any of that would happen. Hopefully by then the medical advances will be there that it may not be necessary. Until that time we are going to do everything we can do to keep his kidney working.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
