So my husband had his kidney removal surgery and it actually went a little better than I was planning. The surgery was scheduled to last about 3 hours so when the doctor came out 1 ½ hours after the surgery started I was rather concerned. If you ever watch a medical show on TV you know that if a surgery is over too fast it usually means there are complications like the patient dying or having cancer spread throughout their body. So when the waiting room phone rang and the volunteer said the surgery was over and she took me to a quiet room in the back for the doctor to speak with me I was sure he was going to say that my husband’s cancer had come back.
It seemed like hours while I waited there in the back but in reality it was maybe 10 minutes. The doctor walked in and smiled. Now this was not a Oh my Gosh I have to tell this woman that her husband comforting smile it was a smile that hey it was done. He said the surgery went easier than was expected. That his kidney was indeed dead, he said it shriveled up and twisted a little so it made grabbing it with his hand a little harder but that everything looked great.
Now when my heart slowed back down and my stomach went back in place I asked the inevitable question about cancer. Look when cancer has already touched someone you love and they need to have a major organ removed the cancer thoughts automatically come racing back. I asked if he was sure that it was not cancer and he looked at me with such reassurance I almost was relaxed. He assured me that he looked around while he was in there and there was nothing that gave him any reason for concern. He did not biopsy anything at all that fact right there let me know that although he had a kidney was just taken out and sent to pathology there was no suspicious looking areas in my hubby’s gut.
I must have looked white as a ghost when the volunteer told me it was done because when I came back out my family knew right away that he was ok. When I asked my sister how she knew she said I did not look like Casper anymore. I guess that is a complement but hey Casper was cute!
