These two news stories may come as no big surprise to some of you, but at least the two celebrities are coming clean with the truth.
After months of seeing photos of Kirstie Alley looking – well, let’s just say a little heavier than her bikini shot on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in November 2006, she has finally admitted publicly that she gained weight. She said that she started screaming when she stepped on the scales for the first time in 15 months because the scale read 228 pounds. Alley had gained 83 pounds and was at her highest weight ever.
However, once she thought about it, she said it wasn’t really a shock. She had not been working out at all and eating Chinese takeout and pasta with butter. Alley said the gain started right after leaving her job as the Jenny Craig spokeswoman. I think the fact that she didn’t get on a scale for 15 months is a sign she knew she was gaining and just wanted to ignore it. Trust me – I know that feeling!
But, she said she has hired a trainer to help her get back down to 140 and ready for bikini season again. And, she has a famous friend offering help. Valerie Bertinelli, Jenny Craig’s current spokeswoman, said that Kirstie should come and work out with her. Isn’t it nice to have friends?
Also in the “This might not come to you as a complete shock” category is the fact that M*A*S*H star David Ogden Stiers revealed he was gay on the Gossip Boy blog. When asked if he was gay, Stiers said “Yes, I am. Very proud to be so.” Stiers also said, “I could claim noble reasons as coming out in order to move gay rights forward, but I must admit it is for far more selfish reasons. Now is the time I wish to find someone and I do not desire to force any potential partner to live a life of extreme discretion for me.” Still sounds pretty noble to me.
Why didn’t Stiers, who played the uppity Major Charles Emerson Winchester III from 1977 until 1983, come out sooner? He said, “From the late 1980s until about seven or eight years ago, you would find certain individuals coming up to you, me, and advocating the position that since we were doing family fare that it would be best were the actors to maintain a certain palatability to parents. These parties likely had heard rumors or harbored suspicions about me and wanted to make sure no embarrassing incidents were forthcoming.”
In addition to his long stint on M*A*S*H, Stiers has starred in Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, , The Hunchback of Notre Dame, “The Dead Zone,” “Lilo and Stitch: The Series,” and served as the narrator for “The American Experience.”
