Know Your Triggers

Consistency is key to a fit lifestyle. Yet it can be very difficult to implement and stick with.

I think one of the ways we can win the war on this is by recognizing the triggers in our life. What are the things that prevent us from remaining consistent?

I was recently thinking about this as it can be a huge problem for me. I can be doing well for a time with my eating and then suddenly I am back to making unhealthy choices.

I am in my groove with exercising at least five days a week and then suddenly days are going by in which I don’t. It is frustrating but I realized that I needed to get to the root.

After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion there are certain triggers that bring it on. For instance, with unhealthy eating one of my triggers is feeling upset. Most often this means feeling down.

Sometimes I make the wrong food choices because I am mad. But most of the time it is because I am sad.

What is your trigger for eating the wrong foods? The first step in winning the war is recognizing what that is.

Then I started thinking about what triggers me falling off the exercise bandwagon. It is stress. When I have stressful things going on in my life, I tend to focus so much on that, I neglect other areas (such as exercise) in my life.

Exercise can combat stress. Yet because I feel stressed, I choose not to do the thing that can help me.

I think that’s called the crazy cycle. But I would guess I’m not the only one on it. We all have different triggers. It’s important to know what they are because once we do, we can deal with them. That is something I will talk about in my next blog.

Have you been able to recognize some of your own triggers?
