One of our favorite movies is “The Emperor’s New Groove,” and we adore Kronk. We were so excited to see a movie made specially to feature our giant buddy. While we got all of the comedy and wild, hare-brained entertainment we were hoping for, we also found the movie unexpectedly introspective and touching.
Kronk (Patrick Warburton) has lived his whole life hoping to get a thumbs-up from his father. If he had a pretty wife and a big house in the hill, he’s sure Papi would be pleased with him, but no matter what he does, he just can’t seem to reach those two goals. He’s working at Mudka’s Meat Hut and finds enjoyment in his culinary pursuits, but he knows that such a humble existence will never please Papi.
Lured into one of Yzma’s (Eartha Kitt) schemes to sell youth potions to the elderly, Kronk thinks he’s got it made. Money is rolling in and the big house is his. But then he sees that the elderly are selling everything they have to buy more and more of the potion, and his integrity demands that he fess up and do the right thing. Hello integrity, bye bye, big house.
Then he almost gets a pretty wife. Working as a camp counselor, he meets up with the charming and very skinny Miss Birdwell (Tracey Ullman) who steals his heart at first sight. But as their competing camps go head to head, the competition proves too much, and Kronk chooses loyalty to his campers over his heart.
With Papi’s visit coming ever closer, Kronk is in despair. How will he ever impress Papi and get the big thumbs-up? And will Papi come to understand that success is not measured with possessions?
While we didn’t like this film quite as much as the original, we still enjoyed it quite a bit and recommend it to you and your family.
This film is rated G.
As an interesting side note, this movie was actor John Fiedler’s last movie. You’ll remember him best as the voice of Piglet.
