Kudos to This Innovative Principal. . .

Who challenged his K-8th grade students to collectively read 10,000 books. He said that they could pick their reward. They chose to shave the initials “HP” (for Harrington Park where the school is located) and to send their beloved principal to the roof for an overnight.

Apparently, when he initially made the deal, he thought it would take the student body until at least spring time to do it. But they met their goal much quicker than he had expected. So last night, he went up to the roof to spend the night outside. If you live in the North East–were you outside last night? It was about 20 degrees and it was, by far, the coldest night of the year. Apparently in sympathy, parents and kids alike brought their principal hot chocolate and goodies throughout the night.

I’m sure Mr. Davies will likely make challenges and promises that involve being at least room temperature. I’m sure the kids got a good laugh and I’m sure it is the talk of the lunch room. I suspect that the kids learned much more than what meets the eye.

Keeping Your Word

I suspect that everyone would’ve understood if Mr. Davies said, “You know what–I didn’t think you’d do it this early–I’ll raise you double or nothing–but it’s just too cold to spend the night.” I bet he even could’ve gotten away with, “Fine I’ll go spend the night outside but let’s pick a night when it’s at least a little above 50.” Perhaps even, “How about I treat you all to MacDonald’s instead and we’ll call it even.” But instead, he taught those kids that a deal is a deal and it is important to keep your word.

He Is Serious About Their Reading

Kids do well in school when they know there are adults who care about them and are behind them. All of his students now know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he cares deeply about their education. More importantly, they all know he is willing to personally invest himself in their lives.

The Value of Community in Achieving a Goal

Perhaps this wasn’t at all his intention but his school has just banded together as a community for a cause. I am sure there were some slackers that read a few pages. But I bet there were lots of kids who went home to read, and then called their friends to see if they had read. He inadvertently (or maybe on purpose) created an atmosphere full of positive peer pressure.

So bravo to Principal Davies and to the many other principals, teachers, and educators that bring creativity into their jobs to inspire their students towards excellence. Nicely done.
