Even though this movie is over twenty years old, I count “Ladyhawke” as one of the best films I’ve ever seen. It truly is incredible.
Matthew Broderick stars as Philippe Gaston, a young man who has been imprisoned in the dungeons of Aquila for theft. He manages to squeeze his way out through the sewage system and escape, but he is nearly recaptured. He meets up with Navarre, the former captain of the guard (Rutger Hauer) and begins to follow him, intrigued by the man himself but also by the beautiful hawk he has with him. Navarre agrees to let Philippe travel with him on one condition—he will help Navarre break into Aquila.
Philippe isn’t too keen on this idea—he just escaped from there and doesn’t want to return. But Navarre has him in a tight spot. He can turn Philippe over to the authorities at any time. Philippe decides to help Navarre, only to discover that something mysterious is going on.
During the night, Navarre disappears, but a huge black wolf prowls around in the forest. Meanwhile, the hawk is nowhere to be seen, but a beautiful woman appears.
The story is slowly revealed. The Bishop of Aquila fell in love with a lovely woman named Isabeau (Michelle Pfeiffer). As a bishop, he could never have her, and he was jealous of the love Isabeau shared with Navarre. He made a terrible deal with the dark forces in order to cast a spell. During the day, Isabeau would be a hawk. At night, Navarre would be a wolf. They were always side by side, but they could never be together in their human forms.
Navarre wants to kill the bishop and exact revenge, but a way to break the spell has been discovered. Philippe gets Navarre into Aquila for the final showdown—one you won’t want to miss.
This movie is rated PG-13 for sword fighting and some language.
