Some rooms are just plain awkward due to their shape or size. Awkward layouts are frequently a dilemma in homes where additions have been made. Sometimes, adding extra space to one area of the home cuts up other spaces. One area is a bit too large, while another is difficult to arrange in a way that creates good flow. Decorating unusually shaped spaces can be fun and interesting, but at times, it can be frustrating.
One of the best ways to address a large or awkward space is to divide it into distinct areas. By creating separate seating areas or adding an area for reading, the room can be broken up into smaller sections so that each flows well individually. This method generally works much better than attempting to arrange a bunch of furniture in one grouping.
In an “L” shaped room for example, making the smaller section into a more private conversation area, while using the larger section for a general living area, may be the most efficient and effective use of space. One option is to place two chairs in the smaller section with a table between them and then add a lamp and some artwork. Then, arrange the larger space as you would if it were completely separate.
Rooms with many different angles and indentations are usually a little more difficult to address. Your areas will need to be smaller, but the basic premise still works. You can place a comfy chair, a lamp, and a small bookshelf or a magazine rack in a nook to make it into a cozy reading area. It might also be the perfect spot to place your desk or your sewing machine, to give yourself a little out of the way area for paperwork or craft projects.
If part of the room is too small for standard furniture, this might be the perfect place to hang artwork, display an interesting urn, or to use a great rug to connect the spaces.
