Las Vegas – Still Family Friendly?

When my husband and I first married and were still childless, we lived in San Diego. Since it was only about a six hour drive to Las Vegas, we went there several times. This was back in early 2000, when Vegas was trying to change its image from “Sin City” to “Family Friendly.” I guess the powers that be thought that was a bad idea and recently, Vegas has returned to its roots of being a less then family friendly city.

My husband and I went to visit his family in Idaho last June and had the opportunity for a layover in Las Vegas. We decided to stay a couple of days, but this time, there was one thing different – we had a one year old with us! I was not exactly sure how well this was going to work, but we still had a great time. There are, of course, some things in Vegas you cannot do with a toddler, but there was still plenty to fill our two days there with fun. Just walking up and down the Strip at night with all the lights thrilled Will to no end. He also enjoyed seeing the dragon statues at Excalibur, the lions at MGM Grand, and the white tigers at the Mirage. And, while Daddy hit the slot machines, mommy and baby were able to find places to sit and relax. Aladdin had a great Starbucks. There were also Internet connections at several casinos such as Boardwalk and Excalibur where I could check email for reasonable rates while Will napped and Daddy played.

But, the best part was Circus Circus. The upper level of the casino is a midway with plenty of fun games like shooting basketballs, throwing darts, etc. We also enjoyed watching the hourly circus acts. But, my favorite was the Adventuredome with its roller coaster, water ride, and Merry Go Round. We felt very welcomed there and next time we visit, we will stay at the Circus Circus Hotel.

There was one family-unfriendly casino – that was the Wynn Las Vegas Resort. Sorry, but I have to call Steve Wynn out here for not even allowing us in the door. He had guards at the door who in no uncertain terms told us that strollers were not allowed.

But, overall, we had a great time. And if I had had a quarter for every time someone told us our baby boy was beautiful, I would have left Las Vegas a rich women!
