Last Chance for Borders Books

I don’t know how closely you have been following all of the Borders going out of business sales, but it looks like time might be running out to get some great bargains. The first store officially closed this week, and other are sure to be following.

When my family and I stopped by last week to our local Borders, we noticed two things: There was some extra inventory that wasn’t there before, and the deals were 70 to 90 percent off. Most books were priced at the lower 70 percent off, romance and reference were at 80 percent off and calendars, magazines and greeting cards were at the high 90 percent off.

People were starting to walk out the door with some of the fixtures, which were marked down as well from their original pricing. Most of the good fixtures, such as solid tables with lots of leg clearance were gone. Although I salivated over some of the remaining bookshelves, my husband assured me that they were too large for our home. My eyes can sometimes be too big for my actual living space.

If you do want to take advantage of the last ditch sales at Borders bookstore, you can use the following tips to make it a more pleasant experience and a good discounted haul.

Be prepared for some weird merchandise. My five-year-old picked up a porno magazine that was at eye level. I’ve never seen that stuff in our Borders before (and yes, I complained passionately to the manager). There were also bathrobes, make up and other strange items.

Try to go during off hours. We went in the middle of the day, and the place was still crowded. I can’t imagine how thing would have been on a Saturday.

Have a plan of attack. People seem to be snatching things up left and right. Figure out which section or genre is most important to you and go there first. This way, you can scout out the deals that are most important to you.

If you find any great deals, leave them in the comments!
