Last-Minute Halloween Ideas

left

Halloween is right around the corner. Does your house look haunted yet?

Mountains of dirty dishes, piles of soiled laundry and black rings around the toilet don’t count.

If you’ve waited until now to get into the Halloween spirit, don’t fret. There are a slew of simple ways you can create a spooktacular holiday display without breaking the bank:

Sweet Treats on a Stick: With a little patience and a few cheap materials you can make a sweet treat on a stick. Halloween topiaries are a cinch to make. All you need are your favorite candies, such as gum drops, caramels or chocolate Kisses, some foam balls, wooden dowels and glue. Use the glue to adhere the candy to the foam balls, insert a wooden dowel and display the finished product in a glass jar filled with plastic spiders, chocolate eye balls or Skittles.

Green Goop: Forget about spending an arm and a leg buying goop from the store. Rather, recruit your kids and make a batch of green Halloween slime in your own kitchen. You will need to mix one teaspoon of Borax with a half-cup of water until it’s smooth. Next, add a few drops of green food coloring to the mix, and then stir in eight ounces of Elmer’s glue. Combine the ingredients, pour into a bowl, and then place several plastic spiders or other creepy, crawly creatures on top.

Halloween Wreath: Recycle an old evergreen wreath from Christmas to make an eye-popping Halloween decoration. Simply paint the green wreath black, wrap some black tulle around it, and then randomly glue pin-pong eyeballs to it to create a spooky doorstopper.

Floating Ghost: Gather a small piece of white fabric, a plastic cup, craft glue, water, a black marker, a paintbrush, scissors and some black yarn. Cut the fabric into a square large enough to fit over the plastic cup. Next, turn the cup upside down and drape the fabric over it. Then, dilute the glue slightly with water and paint the mixture on the fabric covering the cup. Just be careful not to paint the glue all the way to the bottom of the cup. Allow the glue to dry, and then peel the fabric away from cup. Discard the cup. Use the marker to draw a face on the ghost. Poke a hole in the top of the ghost with the scissors and string some black yarn through. Finally, hang your ghost from a tree branch, so it can dance in the night breeze.
