Last Minute Halloween Treats and Costumes

Eeek! Tomorrow is Halloween. And tonight we had to scramble for yet another costume. I had been told the school wasn’t doing parties this year. But tonight, after work, at 8:15 no less, I find out that there is indeed a party and costume parade tomorrow. So we scrambled. The gorilla and the caged zookeeper just is not a school friendly costume. There’s no way my son can manage to get into it on his own, and besides it’s too heavy for him to wear for a long time. And he wouldn’t be able to participate in the party games either.

We have remnants of a few costumes around, so we were able to put together a wand, broken glasses, and a black robe. I printed out a Gryffindor badge that I glued onto the robe. And we’ll draw on a lightning bolt scar tomorrow. I could have also put together a vampire costume, but they aren’t supposed to be scary for school.

For the last minute party refreshments we put together Ritz cracker spiders. I’ve made these for a lot of parties. They are very flexible. I almost have what they take without running to the store. You spread peanut butter on one cracker, put on pretzel sticks for legs, then press on another cracker. On the top cracker you can use M & M’s, raisins, candy corn, skittles, or chocolate chips for eyes. Kids can make these by themselves. It’s really fun to see how creative they get with the eyes and mouth and number of legs.

My other favorite last minute treat is to make rice crispie treats. I form them into little balls and put a pretzel or bit of licorice on top to make a pumpkin. And of course, a bag of candy always works, too!
