This afternoon we stopped by our local bookstore to find out the schedule for the Harry Potter party tonight. Already, the front window was lined with at least 70 boxes of the book. The boxes were all taped several times around with security tape.
While we have been planning to attend the party, we hadn’t actually planned on wearing costumes. But by the time we got home the boys decided that they were going to need to dress up.
Here are some ideas we’ve come up with for last minute costumes:
Rob your Halloween box for witches hats, black robes, fake glasses, werewolf masks, scary hands, dragon costumes, or just even that tree costume from the school play
If you don’t have black robes, try black shirts. You can always print out clip art images of Hogwarts badges and pin them to your robes. And if you don’t have black, try to dress in the Gryffindor house colors of red and gold. Or dress as an Azkaban prisoner with black and white stripes.
Just about anything could be a wand. Consider chopsticks, a dark colored pencil or even a straight stick out of the yard. Small brooms could be used for Quidditch brooms, too. A ping pong ball could be colored yellow to mimic the golden Snitch.
Also think about stuffed animals. Owls and snakes can be added to a costume.
Use an eyeliner pencil to make lighting bolt scars. One of my sons wrote “I must not tell lies” in red ink on the back of his hand as a nod to Harry’s detentions in The Order of the Phoenix.
Another fun easy to throw together costume would be going as a wizard who was trying to dress like a muggle and getting it all wrong. The idea is to do something like wearing a bathing suit over clothes or all different seasons of clothing all mixed together.
Have fun tonight!
