Last-Minute Thank Yous

I had to make an unexpected trip out of town last week, and by the looks of all four major airports I was forced to spend time in, there must not be a single student left in any school in this country. Yet, I know this is not the case, as my daughter’s school year doesn’t end until June 4th. That leaves me with just under a week to get my act together and finish gathering the appropriate thank you gifts for all the important people that helped make my kindergarten’s school experience a positive one.

If I was really organized (and rich) I would be passing out thank you gifts to the school custodians, secretaries, administrators, music, art and P.E. teachers, but alas, at the rate I am going I will be lucky to get my daughter’s primary teacher taken care of before school gets out.

If you are scrambling to find the perfect thank you for your child’s teacher and you are working on a fixed income, then consider the following gift ideas:

Pet Supplies: Does your child have a class pet? If she does, then you might consider sparing the teacher the added expense of keeping the pet fed and safe. Put together a gift basket of hamster (gerbil, bunny, turtle, fish, bird, or whatever animal) food, treats, shavings, new bowl, etc.

Meal Coupons: It’s easy to hand out gift cards to local restaurants or delis, but if you want to personalize a coupon or meal card, then consider making your own. Give your child’s teacher a coupon for a homemade lunch to be brought to him or her next school year. The teacher can cash in the coupon on a day that she forgot her lunch or on a day that she is swamped with work. You could also bring a frozen casserole or lasagna for her to take home and feed her family.

Note Cards: This is a simple way to get your kids involved in making a thank you for their teacher. Simply use rubber stamps on plain note cards and envelopes to make homemade stationary. Teachers are constantly writing notes, so this gift is ideal. What’s more, it is fairly inexpensive if you buy card stock and envelopes in bulk from a paper supply store.
