Late Night Cravings

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

One if my biggest obstacles in dieting is the late night cravings. I stay up late to get work done and end up getting hungry. I really need to turn my night owl into an early bird to avoid this trap altogether. A lack of sleep and overeating are obvious factors in weight gain. It is hard to be really hungry at night and not indulge. So, I end up eating whatever is quick, easy, and usually bad for me. Through the desperate eyes of fatigue and hunger I can justify eating a bowl of ice cream if it is the quickest and best sounding treat in the house. Certainly that is one of the worst things one can do when trying to lose weight. So this begs the question; what can you eat when the cravings hit that won’t destroy your diet?

Small bowl of whole grain cereal with skim milk.

Veggie plate

Fruit

Handful of nuts

Serving of cottage cheese

Serving of popcorn (not with high fat butter or overly salty)

Water with lemon (sometimes dehydration presents as hunger so try this first)

Cucumber and hummus

Small apple and low fat yogurt

Granola and low fat yogurt

Half a Sandwich (lean meat, whole grain bread, lettuce tomato, and fat free mayo)

Whole grain piece of bread with one tablespoon peanut butter and half a grapefruit.

Hard boiled egg

Cup of tea

When you get a craving try drinking a full glass of water. Add lemon as that helps with hydration. Then brush your teeth. You are less likely to eat or eat anything sugary after you have a minty fresh mouth. That was a little trick I heard about many years ago. You may also want to end your evening with a cup of tea or a warm cup of milk with honey.
