Laundry Tips for Saving Money

Most of us are trying to save money any way we can. One area that you may not have considered when it comes to this is your laundry.

So here are some tips that may help save you some cash. It could also make the task of laundry more manageable.

The first tip is to wash less. The average top-loading washing machine uses about 40 gallons of water. Even though front-loading machines use less (between 10 and 24 gallons), it is still a waste of money to put in smaller loads.

You can save not only the use of your water but laundry soap and energy by waiting until you have a full load. If you find that you run out of certain items quickly (towels, socks, etc.) then buy a few extra. It may initially cost money but will save you in the long run.

Speaking of water, you can also save money by washing your clothes in cold water. The only exception I personally make to this is bedding and towels. But you can save a lot of energy by sticking to cold water when it comes to your clothes. It can also help prevent them from shrinking and fading.

Do you find yourself rewashing items because they are stained? Pre-treating your garments with a stain remover can eliminate unnecessary washings.

You should also make sure your clothes are separated by colors. For instance, whites and reds don’t mix. You could end up wasting money by having to throw out clothing that was mixed in with another color or became dingy.

I talked about washing less by waiting until you have a full load. Another way you can do this is by stretching out the time between washings.

Obviously some garments need to be washed after they have been worn, such as socks and underwear. But jeans, skirts or other items can wait if you have only worn them a few hours.

The same is true for bedding. You don’t need to wash these items on a daily basis. I wash the sheets and blankets in our home every week or week-and-a-half.
